Splicing two short spools of wire to make one

I am going to post this in two forums as I am not sure which one it should be in.

We lost a bunch of wire from one of our dipsy rods. The question is can you splice with a small swivel or crimp two short spools/reels of wire to create on longer say 1000' spool or are we going to run into probles when we get a fish on.

I would put backing on it before I spliced 2 spools of wire together. I don't know how the knot would hold up.
