Which one is better, Lowrance HDS 8 or Furuno 585. I would go with a p66 transducer. I like the lowrance but am scared of some issues with their customer service. I looked at the Hummingbird 958 and that one is out of my list.

Lowrance cleaned up their act lowrance technolgy is ahead of furuno and the charting options are awesome on them a lot more bang for the buck

Lowrance may have cleaned up their act, but if you ever dealt with them in the past you wouldnt go there again. Furuno all the way.

If all your looking for is a fish finder you are not going to beat a 585. Just take a walk down charter boat rows and see whats on the dash. I see more 585's then anything else.

Been using Furuno since 1995 great units absolutely no issue's whatsoever. Lowrance before 1995 and many issues.

585 is what I recommend.

I already have a stand a lone GPS but I thought a spare would be good too. I really like the screen of the lowrance but if i have problems with it what is going to happen?! Does anyone have the 585 with a transom mount transducer? if so how does it work and which one do you have.

Out west the biggest percent of our lake fishing boats are made of aluminium and are all transom mounted with no problems at all.

I installed a 585 for the Hot Pursuit boys in the spring, with transom transducer. I took several trips with them and was very impressed with the unit, and the performance of the transducer, even at cruising speed. Most impressive was how well it tracked downrigger balls. Voorhees may chime in, but as far as I know he was thrilled with it.

Airmar-P66 and the Airmar TM-260 used more in the salt water
