Hard to believe I'm catching quality crappies in the St Lawrence River in March. Good average size and we actually caught twice as many as in the photo but my buddy took half.

Largest is nearly 14".

If I told you I'd have to kill you but they are where the water warms more quickly (shallow bays, canals, tributaries, marinas etc. The minnows move into the warmer water and the crappies follow. French Creek in Clayton is often hot. This happens well before the spawn and typically in early May. Not this year!
