Do I really need to buy a special "leadcore rod" or will any standard downrigger rod work? Ive heard that the leadcore can eat up the guides...

Lots of good fisherman are using the Ugly Stick BW1101 in a 9' length. We've never had a problem with the leadcore being to abrasive on the line guides....Zeke & Cyn(Strike 3)

leadcore's just a dacron sheath, shouldn't bother guides at all. 7-strand wire, on the other hand, is extremely abrasive. Maybe that's what you heard about?

thanks. no it was lead ive heard if you dont have the right guides it will rip the sheath and then the lead rubbing damages the guides.

Okuma makes a nice leadcore/wire rod that's only like $35. Solid metal guides throughout. In fact I've starting switching over a lot of my boat rods to it, beyond just those with 'core...no more worrying about the guide inserts getting bashed and broken.

 Okuma Classic Pro GLT Rod - CP-CL-862M. Great leadcore and copper rod. Started running them last year and I love them.

I was close.... Okuma Classic Pro GLT Rod - CP-DR-862M are the rods I ordered a few days ago (27.95) downrigger rods. Im guessing these are the same but without the metal guides. Should have started this thread before I ordered. The leadcore rod was 39.95 maybe ill put another order in for one of those.

You do not need anything great for lead-core line the worst pole is cabela`s lead core pole, unless you change the tip. I have been running lead on Oneida for a long time, and put the lead line to the test as we jerk this line for eyes, and have used about every downrigger rod out there we like cabela`s lead line the best, and daiwa accudepth poles the best 9'6"
