Walker Adjustable Releases

I am hoping someone out there can help me out. I am very new to fishing lake ontario and have had some trouble with my adjustable releases on my downriggers. I am using 30 lbs P-Line braid and was wondering if this Walker Spring release is only meant to be used on mono as the line is much thicker than that of the braid? As well, is there a proper way to snap the line into the release, whether snapping in it from the top or the bottom? Any information on this setup or any advice for catching trout and salmon on the big "o" would be much appreciated.

P.S. Whitby marina is where I launch out of. Not sure if anyone has any info on fishing reports from that area.
