Several reasons. Mono has a lot of stretch to it and does not let you release the dipsy. Wire has no stretch. Next, fleas get really bad and wire cuts through it. Fleas dont stick to wire as bad as mono and braided line. We use 1000' of wire because kings will pull hundreds of ft out on top of what we put out. Hope this helps.

30# fills the reel nicely with out using backing. And like a fiddle string it has the right pitch when pulled through the water.

Yup, and with 40 lb test mono line, you need a really big reel to fit 1000 ft of it.

Agree with all the above - fleas, stretch issues. Also wire gets deeper than mono as there is less drag due to higher density of line and thinner line for same strength.

always the option of 500' of wire and braid backer...then only time braid is in the water is when a fish hits

up side is only 1 spool for 2 reels

down side is if you get a kink or break off you got a reel with short wire
