When tying the willis knot with leadcore is there a trick to keep the sharp lead from popping through the sheath. Id say 75% of the time I tie the knot then inspect it and three inches back from the knot the lead is already sticking out the sheath....

its just the end that i clip off that is sticking out. so where the mono touches the lead in the sheath. that lead (the end) is the part thats sticking out.

When you peel the sheath back to reveal the lead cut the lead with scissors. A clean cut and careful insertion of the mono will keep the remaining lead intact. If it does stck out again just peel back a little of the sheath and cut it again after the knot is tied.

If you get your leader material right up to the lead and keep it there when you finish the knot off it helps a little, if you make sure that the lead is blunt and has no point it helps, but you will see that tail poke through from time to time on lead no matter what you do. I have reeled the rig in and found that the lead worked it's way out of the sheath while trolling. Just carefully poke it back it, you will see in most cases that the sheath didn't tear, the lead just works it's way out and the sheath opens up around it. If the sheath tears and gets frayed looking you want to retie your knot.

Paul, how do you peel the sheath back after the knot is tied?

You don't. You bunch up the sheath behind the knot and the lead sticking out and give the lead enough room to get back in. Sorry for not being more clear.

And Ray........ummmm.........uhhhh......hmmmmmm.........nevermind.
