I make the leader the length that I want the lure behind the ball. That way you got the flea flicker all the way down to the release. I use 12-15 lb. Floro on the finger lakes.

Flea flicker makes lousy union knots. I like to use loop to loop connections for the flouro to FF. Perfection loop in both and just half hitch the loop in the flouro to the loop in the FF. I don't care for FF because it does not tie well ....20 lb is not bad but 30 is terrible for knots that require twists. No fleas with 30 lb Ande and you can tie a bloodknot or uni to uni for the Floro leader

To answer your question about leader length, enough to make a few wraps around the spool on your reel. Then if ya gotta cut off a frey a couple inches you have enough to retie the terminal end and have flouro left to the main line. Match your main line test to leader test for salmon.

I use 30 pound Big Game and then a uni knot to about 7 feet of 20# Floro. In my opinion 30# Mono works just fine for the fleas. When the leader gets a little too short just tie on another. I like the leader just a little shorter than the rod.
