The wire should get your deeper than braid.  If you do go with wire I recommend using crimps to attach your swivels and snaps.  You will hear many people say you can tie a knot with the wire.  Ive tried it twice, and both times that knot snapped when the fish hit.  And no there wasn't any kinks in it.  So just do yourself a favor and stick with the crimps.

It would be a good idea to get yourself the book "BIG WATER EDITION PRECISION TROLLING"!  That book gives you all the info you need on fishing with dipsys both with wire line and several lb tests of mono. It also has a section for lead core.
