Had the pleasure of fishing for Kings the last 5 days. The most frustrating thing is we had 2 trebled hooks snap and one saftey hook straighten. 2 monsters were about 70 feet from boat after fighting for 20 minutes and ripping 600 feet of wire, multiple runs then they both broke the same way. Seems when they turn broadside and give a good head shake, snap game over. We had 3 different manufactures for the hook types but wonder if it's worth upgrading to some higher quality hooks and re tying our gear? We slow the boat down to idle, maybe we should hit neutral, or even chase them? Maybe it's just hard to land the big beasts?

haven't fished ontario yet going sep. 2 for the first time, but from everything i have been reading. your drag was most likely too tight.

For Kings in the great lakes, a good quality hook is a must. But, I also agree with above. Loosen you drags a little more after the hit for this time of year. The fish have hard jaws but once the hook is in loosen the drag. You are much better fighting a fish for 15 minutes more and have it in the cooler than a quicker fight and nothing to show for it because it got away at the boat.

Thanks for the tip Gambler, we were thinking that was the plan for our next outing, now we know what to buy.

Yeah, 2x or stronger. We have been using a VMC Spark Point 4x this year after we were unable to get the Owners. Very impressed with that hook.

I have to believe your prolly a little tight on that drag too.

riffled salt water hooks. there a little bigger but wow. my 9 year old had no problem staying hooked up( even with all the slack times) and we've havent brok one yet.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you may be puttin' the pressure on 'em a tick too much when they are coming close to the boat.

Easy to do, and we too have been guilty of this as well.

When you have a fish on the wire, slow the boat down about .5 mph & make sure your drag is not too tight! You may need to speed back up some when you are netting the fish to keep it behind the boat.

what size owner st-56 hooks? size 2?

Owner 2x size 2 will work.

I use them on tournament ties or when Coho are around.

Owner 2x size 1 when specifically targeting Fall Kings.

Good luck
