I fish saltwater every year and its very hard on my reels. Lost 2 reels every year they lock up . I run freshwater on them after every use but still they lock up.

been using mine ,nuttin fancy for 4 years ,,gotta clean em good 1nc a month ,mild soap and soft brush on ocassion and oil ,,,the navy don't keep them steel ships running for many years by neglecting them

soak them in fresh water than run them under the faucet while realing them i used to do a cod trip in maine and a week in the keys with my dad for years and use the LC reels for the cod we did that for 10 years and i'm using those same reels now for my dipseys they are diawa great lakes 47lcs by the way and are from the early 80's good maintenece can make good equipment go a lot ways.

Good salt water reels are called PENN. All my Penns are used every year on the Cape and Stellwagen Bank. My oldest one is from 1984 and she still works like new!

Hose down the reels after EVERY outing. If you get a lock-up, it can be often caused by a single grain of sand in the gears. The way I unfreeze a lock-up is to open the guts, clean out the old grease and fill the compartment full of gear oil. Put it together and reel. Usually it frees-up quickly. You will want to have an old towel handy under the reel as the gear oil will drip out. Once the reel is working, clean out the gear oil and lubricate with reel grease. Try it.
