When I started tying my own fly leaders many years ago, I was using 50 Lb Ande Fluoro and it was very good, but I've been using 50 lb big game for years now and it works great as well. I really haven't noticed a difference in action or leader life since I started using Big Game. There's no need for fluoro at that pound test line IMO, regular mono is plenty stiff at 50 lb test.

I don't know if mono works as well as fluoro, as I only use fluoro. I use 30# test and have had no break offs. In fact, I snagged bottom one time trolling and one of my swivel hoops (steel) bent open before the 30# test broke off. 30# test fluoro is easier to find and cheaper than 50# test, so that's one reason to use it.

Ive used 50# big game without fail since I began tying my own leaders and it tends to be a cheaper solution to fluoro. The biggest gain for me and the reason i only use fluoro now is its durability. It holds up to a pounding much longer then mono.
