Upgrading from an 18' aluminum to a 23' Fiberglass.  New boat weighs 3300 lbs dry w/o the engine.  Main engine is a 200 HP Yamaha.

I have a 7.5 HP Mercury kicker i've used for years on my aluminum for trolling.  I'm wondering if that would have enough thrust to push the new boat trolling 2.5 - 3.0

Anyone have any experience with this size motor pushing that size boat?

Thanks in advance!

With a high thrust prop, it probably will work. But will be running at high RPMs to go 3 MPH. 2 or 4 stroke is a factor on gas consumption.

It should work long as it is in clear water (prop below transom).  I push my 23' proline using a 7.5hp Johnson and I can get about 3.5-4.5mph against a 3' chop. Granted its at full throttle but it works and doesn't get overheated while doing it.

thanks for the replies.... going to take it out with the 7.5 and see what it can do.  The new boat put a dent in the wallet so buying a new 4 stroke 9.9 is not in the cards for the moment.
