13 years ago when I was 2 years old I caught my first Salmon in the Spring LOC derby, and have loved fishing for these fish ever since. The west part of Lake Ontario during the Spring is the place to be fishing for Salmon and Trout species.

May 3rd: Didnt really have a game plan for the first day of the tournament. So we just decided to head straight out of port and set up in 60 feet of water and see if we couldn't turn a Laker or a King. We had just finished setting up and the back rigger on my side fired off with a King on. Fish came on a Mag NK with green, gold, and silver colors on it. After we released that fish the back rigger on my dads fired with a laker. Fish came on a fin-lander spoon in a black, green, white, and silver colors and we couldn't keep the fish off that spoon for the rest of the day as we went 14-17 with a mixed bag of kings and Lakers. Fish came in 60-80 feet of water with the deepest rigger at 72 feet. Kinda frustrated I only got 2 fish to fire on my side of the boat.

May 4th: Started off in the same water we fished the day before and was starting off slow getting a laker off the bat on the fin-lander spoon. Things then got a little out of control as we were swallowed up by a whole swarm of boats as far as the eye could see east, west, north, and south. But then things started to pick up for us starting with a TRIPLE of Kings. All 3 fish were teenagers 12, 16, 18 lbs. First fish was the first fish we had on the torpedo diver ever. Spoon was a silver streak black fin tuna. 2nd fish was on the side rigger. Spoon was Finger Lakes King of sting. 3rd fish on the back rigger spoon was the fin-lander spoon again. Lets just say my dad told me to give up because all the rods on his side was cleared while the rods on my side didnt move. We were fishing in 60 to 100 foot of water in the morning then moved off shore to 2-300 foot of water getting another lake trout and 3 more kings. Went 8 for 11 the whole day.

May 5th: Instead of fishing in the shallows for the day we decided to go offshore again. It was a slow day for us as we went 4 for 5 with all fish being kings in the teenage size range. Hot lure was still the fin-lander but got fish on the black fin tuna and the king of sting.

May 6th: Unfortunately I had to go to school today but called up my dad periodically to see how him and his buddy were doing. They only went 2 for 4 with small coho's.

I also got the opportunity to see my 2 favorite boats that are on Lake Ontario. Team Thrillseekers and U-Betcha sportfishing what 2 amazing rigs.

Heck of a report. Your dad sure did the right thing early in your life. He has given you the gift of a lifetime....a hobby that will cut across all the trials and tribulations of life as well as supply a lot of joy in doing something you love...my son has been my fishing partner since 2 1/2 yrs old and he is 35 now...we fish everything from Crappies and Bullheads to Kings and ice fishing as well. It's a great bonding factor! Enjoy yourself and best of luck this season.

Great post! I can't make it up until Memorial day weekend, and reading posts like this make the wait even harder! I also concur with tlombardozzo. I also googled for fin-lander but came up empty. Anybody know if they're still made or where to find them?

They actually do not make fin-lander spoons anymore
