Historically if you wanted to catch Browns, especially in the Spring, the thing to do was break out the plugs. Whereas if catching Salmon was your objective then “common knowledgeâ€Â

It all has to do w/ what is popular at a certain time. Right now a ton of people are caught up in the popularity of flies right now. Their was a time when at least half of your spread were j-plugs. The more a certain product is in the water, the more chance we will see leaderboard fish caught on them.

Run what you do the best with at tournament time. Practice and experiment when it's not.

We use plugs in shallow water to avoid snags when we make turns or have to stop the boat. The shallow water is where the warmest waters are and the browns which are bottom oriented fish like the shallows.
