Longitude/Latitude.  That's how far North they went.  Rather that say how deep they went some guys give hints as to GPS coordinates.  Can be different depths of water off different ports.  Off the Genny, that's way the heck out there.

It's the middle set of numbers (minutes) of latitude.  Each minute of latitude in our part of the world is approximately a mile. so for instance, at my home port of Olcott, the harbor is at the 20 line (20.2 technically) and 20.4 at the pierheads, so out of that port, the 26 line would be approximately 5.5 miles offshore.

Looks like at the Genny, the coordinates are approximately 43.14.183N Lat and 77.32.028 W Long at the piers, so yes at that port the 26 line would be 12 miles out.

Guys use the minutes of longitude in the same way, except the minutes of longitude are approximately 3/4 of a mile apart.

I believe the chart can be found here, which is linked from the old attheoak.net site which is now http://www.wtv-zone.com/riparian/index.html:

http://www.wtv-zone.com/riparian/taylor/lat-depths.html

I've tried to cut and paste below.

North Lat Line Approximate
Depth Of Water
23N 50' 24N 100' 25N 250' 26N 300' 27N 400' 28N 450' 29N 500' 30N 550' 31N 575' 32N 600' 33N 610' 34N 605' 35N 600' 36N 590' 37N 560'

If you continue trolling north after this and the numbers keep dropping, it means perhaps you should do a 180, unless you have a Canadian license.
