dipsy rings? smelt?

what do the rings do? should I buy them I bought 3magnum dipsys for my trip do I need the rings also?

another question will smelt work like herring and alewives for a meat rig

the rings give a dipsy more surface area.... they dive deeper, not really necessary. As far as smelt most of us that are running meat are using herring. It smells more but hey give it a try and let us know.

You might want to check out the NYS regs as far as the use of any baitfish not coming from a given water being used in.  I think you need a receipt from bait dealer less than 10 days old stating they are virus free) and I believe anything used frozen or dried like the alewives or herring has to be commercially packaged.
