I'm more of a shore fisherman but I recently got a boat and want to start fishing on Lake Ontario. Planning on taking it out in the next few days but don't want to go anywhere to far! If I'm coming out of Irondequit Bay into the lake, what kind of fish can I catch in that general area. How far out do I have to go, how do I catch them. Thanks, all help and tips appreciated!

Nearshore water is pretty warm right now.  Trout & salmon out deep.  If you get out well before dawn you may run into a brown or two.  Otherwise head east up to the point & you may run into some bass & a home-body Brown.  Check out the 30-60 ft depth.

Like LongLIne said, get out early, real early.

This time of year, especially with the exceptionally warm water temps, for the good fishing for Salmon and Trout you'll need to get in some where from about 150 to 500 feet of water. That's in the neighborhood of 4 to 9 miles off shore depending on the direction you take out of I-bay.

I'd start with some full body natural plugs, then change up to some fat-mag type spoons.  All trolled very slowly & near the bottom.
