Mooching rigs

Has anyone tried a mooching rod and reel on a down rigger, fishing the big O.

I know they use them on the Pacific Coast.

A few Canadian guys I know use them. I would like to pick up a few set-ups to have fun with. The guys I know are using the Islander reels on Sage mooching rods. Not a cheap combo.
