Buying cut bait

I am trying to cut down on the cost of buying herring. Does anyone know where I can buy fresh herring at a grocery store or bait shop and I can get a deal or brine it myself? Thanks for any replies

You don't think it's worth the trouble? Stick to flies,spoons,ect. Idk in my experiences live or dead bait almost always prevails until I bust out the fly rod

It took 3 of 3 hits Monday morning for me and 3 of 6 hits last Thursday so I think it's still worth using. I can't see going through more than an $8 pack a day though. That would be 6 fish that destroyed the bait. If you do need more than 6 strips id say you had a damn good day and it was $ well spent.

I only go through a pack when I go out for the weekend but I was hoping to get some from the store or something brine it like eggs seen a bunch of different ways on the web and have enough for a few weekends and cut a few dollars.

Mitchell's in Rochester has whole herring you fillet yourself. You get 12 herring I think for 8.00-9.00$, 24 strips if you can fillet a small fish.
