Look at this! I've seen a couple like this but this one was intense! Theory of way may cause it? Anyone?

Birth defect or a treble hook induced injury that never would have closed without sutures.

hook injury followed by an infection is my guess it looks like the one margin is still red and oozing probably still an active infection that would spread and likely kill the fish in time.  it happens just like with humans only fish dont get perscriptions for antibiotics.  the wound could have been cause by a rock or zebramussle on bottom when the fish was digging up a meal as well

Rest of the fish was healthy and perfect body shape. No signs of malnutrition...
