I took the BoatUS online course because I have BoatUS insurance and they offered a 10% discount if I had a boating safety certificate.  I thought the 6 hours invested was worth the savings.

Here is a little bit of info about boating course requirements.

http://www.boatus.com/magazine/2013/October/your-states-boating-education-requirements.asp

and the next link is to a free boating course for NY waters.

Does this course satisfy the new boating course requirement just signed into law in NYS or is a classroom course still required? Thanks for the link

I honestly do not know the answer, but here is a phone number that should help (518) 474-0445. These are the people who enforce these laws so they should know.

The 10% discount on insurance is nice but just like an automobile, everyone should be required to take the course and pass the test. I was new at boating in 1988 and did the same thing for the discount. But after I was finished, the 10% didn’t matter.  What mattered was that I learned a lot about correct boat handling and a whole lot more.

There’s some charter operators the fish out of the same port as I do, that need to take or retake the course (especially about right-of-way) AND PASS THE TEST!
