I would say if your in the bays fishing or in shallows all the time it would be beneficial but if your after salmon / trout in open lake I think it's dead weight but that's an opinion.

I used bottom and side imaging both in Lake Ontario and on the fingerlakes.

On the open water(Ontario)the side imaging was close to useless,mostly because there was no structure to find,although I sometimes registered baitschools that were high up of to the side and on the return tack I would aim for these schools using the side imaging information of the previous tack. But overall,it mattered very little.

On the fingerlakes with its vertical dropoffs it is great. Specially for bass and pike that is hanging out in  this structure. I used it a lot on the north-west end of Keuka lake and picked up a lot of fish with it.
