there is a free state launch mid lake on the north shore called godfrey point, you can launch there and there is a drop that goes from 15ft to 30 ft right in front that goes all along the north shore, you can also fish the shallows right by the launch or run out to the middle of the lake and fish shakelton shoals. Early season you will want bucktails and heddon sonars for jigging

opening weekend out there is competition day tho.  everybody with a boat is fishing, from yachts to bathtubs and innertubes the lake will be loaded with fishermen.  my advice is to fish the weeds in about 14 feet of water on the south shore or fish deep on the north shore with jigs or troll bottom bouncers and floating rapalas down deep.  deep is about 25-35 feet on onieda lake.

Wade and cast stickbaits at night off any ditch or flowing water entering the lake.

If your coming up from Maryland there is a state launch on the south shore as well. At 6am the lot will be loaded. Like said above, that weekend is mobbed on the lake. It's actually comical at the launch watching people that fish once or twice a year launching or trying to launch. So you will need patience for sure. On opening weekend you will see where the boats are mainly at. Bucktail jigs are the easiest to use to pull in a limit of fish.
