Question? Any one ever try 300' plus early in the yr (now) for steelhead and young kings? My brown trout skills are lacking and lakers get old after a bit. So I guess the question is, is it waste of time starting at 300' fow and doing a north troll towards 500' fow to look for steelhead this time of yr.

You will not contact steelhead but you could contact immature salmon.  Problem is this time of year they are in winter-mode, which means 150'-300' down.  Difficult to get baits down that deep, and difficult to get them to bite.  You will be all alone out there with no help if you get into trouble also so you may want to partner up with another boat.

Most of the steelhead are in the tribs right now spawning.  There are some fall spawn fish out in the lake but they are usually found in the warm near shore waters.

Shorline fishing is the easiest!  Find 8-15 fow...10-12 lbs line with stickbaits 100 -150 ft back off planer boards.  Small spoons on the downriggers 3 ft down 70 ft back.  1.5-2.2 knots.

Appreciate the advice. Tomorrow I'll be lightning up the line on the reels and give it a shot. Basically I've been using my 20 lb line on my downrigger rods. Flat lining off the back. We'll get some in line boards, better selection of rapalas, 10lb test, and give it a valiant effort.

If you don't want to strip all the line off just tie a small barrel swivel that will pass through the eyes of your rod and attach a 10 foot segment of 10-12 lb fluoro.
