WESTERN NEW YORK, N.Y. (WKBW) After a record-setting cold and snowy winter, this is not the news that anyone wants to hear.

But according to the US Army Corps of Engineers, it is possible that the ice boom might not be taken out until the end of May.

The reason is because there is still over 1,000 square miles of thick-packed ice in the eastern part of Lake Erie.

The ice problem is also hurting the local sport fishing industry that says the lack of out-of-town fishermen in May could result in a $400,000 loss to the local economy.
