A friend of mine is thinking about adding a chute rigger on his stern drive Striper. Any thoughts on this? It seems like the prop and downrigger cable would be dangerously close to me.

I thought the same thing until I ran one off my 22' Starcraft stern drive. I have cannon riggers and extend the boom all the way out with no issues.

We do it. You need extended boom and don't pull your rigger weight in to you when its more than at the surface of the water.

4' boom and a downrigger with a tip up boom feature like a Scotty or a Big Jon.

On my previous boat a 4' boom with twin sterndrives for 10+ years no problem what so ever. Downrigger had autostop at fixed depth (above top of sterndrive extending over prop), and weight retriever. I don't feel like I missed anything by not having a boom tip-up feature.

Boat also had twin trolling plates and that didn't negatively affect the setup either.
