They are talking the boom may come out by the 1st week of May.  I'm guessing that's going to make derby fishing the bar very interesting with debris, ice, and boat traffic.  I haven't fished the lake long enough to experience a year like this.

What should we expect?  Do most ice chunks float high enough to see?

Was either the Spring of 1995/96 when there was a late release. Ice was still coming out of the river almost all the way down to Wilson. Fished on the edge of the flow and caught laker after laker, couple steelies. No kings to be found.

The stuff I've.seen after.the boom removal!. Giant picnic tables, tree trunks l, 50 foot trees. Be careful out there.

rule of thumb, if you see seagulls standing on the surface of the water in front of you, slow down and turn

i was fishing with spoonfed about 7 years ago and we went out in the morning to a log field that was probably 1/2 a mile by a mile long. It was impossible to troll. I never go out before sun up just because of debris.

As so many have stated, the biggest danger is the wood in the water. Logs sometimes are invisible until you get very close. Ice is usually obvious. Waterlogged, logs can float near the surface with nothing above the water surface. It is foolish to run wide-open in river current waters and nearby. Keep eyes peeled forward on 50 yds. of water surface in front of boat and a hand on the throttle. No sightseeing, keep focused at all times and have someone else watching constantly also. Expect these conditions for the entire month of May this boating season.
