Have found coleman spray with 40%deet very good for the little bears.

I also spray on before I go out works best.

soon the fleas will be here, summer heaven, hot, bugs, frustration, only a screamer makes it worth it

I have heard that the "vampire flies" are attracted to white.  I believe this is true because I had a white car and they would cover it when it was parked near the lake.  I do not wear anything white when the flies are out and I seem to have less attention than people wearing white.  I continue to look for the ultimate solution !!

Guess I'm at a bit of a disadvantage with my bright white whaler.....should I spray paint it green or something?

Les,

If you spray paint it in a camoflauge pattern, neither the flies or the fish will see it.....just something to think about

One of my work trucks had a blue interior.  It will be full of flies at a work site where the other trucks had gray and they would be empty.   Got one of those paddles that zap them with new batterys !!  sizzle sizzle !!!

  Sean thanks for the tip bud.

I'm going to try pinning a surrounding light rag or cloth to my pants leg. Soaked in 98% deet. Or even the ultra shield so it's not on your skin.

I find that droppings from the neighbours dog collected and left on the bow of the boat keep the flies away from me.

I ordered this spray based on another thread about biting flies

http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/37425-black-biting-flies-while-trolling-on-lake-ontario/

Tried it yesterday on one ankle, and left the other untreated.

I kid you not....the treated ankle had NO flies visit.  The untreated lasted 20 minutes before I sprayed it as well.   Rest of the afternoon, I was fine.   My co pilot however, didn't use it

and he was swatting at them.

Its the Buggspray no scent.  It has two additional chems besides deet that are specifically for biting flies (stable flies etc).

I'm convinced it works.    Enough so that I'm going to buy a bunch more just to have them.

Used this stuff last year and seemed to work pretty good...

I've had decent success laying out a few scented dryer sheets in the helm area. Guess the scent repels the flies and little pesky bugs. Only drawback is when you walk out into the back of the boat, you're met by the flying critters, but they're non-existent when I walk back into the helm area. I've been using this tactic for a few years now and never fails.

I have also heard about using scented dryer sheets.  My dad is big into golfing and almost always wears a baseball cap when he's playing.  Underneath his baseball cap during the summer is a fresh scented dryer sheet.  Seems to work pretty well

I bought Bugg Spray from Amazon last year.  Definately helps, Only I found it only worked for 1-2 hours before I needed to re apply.

I'm okay with re applying.   I bought the 4 oz bottles, and it only took a few pumps to cover my lower legs.   One bottle will last a long time and since it works...I'm good to go.

anything with deet will work...be careful deet will eat vinyl and rubber

I found 98% deet spray at Dicks one year in a small bottle.   I've used it on the lake, and as far as I could see, the biting flies just thought it was salad dressing on my legs....didn't do a thing.

It also eats car paint....I found out the hard way when I hosed myself down and the over spray from the can hit the side of the car.....
