You should be able to get some tension on your spool if the reel is working properly....it sounds as though  the reel itself that is the problem and not the copper. In that case all the adjustments to the copper setup won't do much until it is corrected.

Gotta keep your thumb on spool when letting it out.  The first 50 - 100 feet are the worst. My brother made a mess for me quite a few times this past weekend..  Trashed one  spool so bad that I have to respool it.

Gotta' thumb it until you have tension, then STILL handle with care is how I deploy it.

I use a Spro barrel swivel..........goes thu the guides ok, still care is used then as well.

I have used 12 and 16 color leadcore on the fingerlakes. It will get you deeper ,but the water resistance will neutralize the added weight. In turns when the angle causes the core to slow down in the water it will reach great depths and cause snags on the bottom. Stinger dive bombers at the end of the leadcore where the backing begins are much more effective. Here is a little reminder about depth per color on a 10 color core.
