What a mess!!!

At first I thought it didn't affect us much locally, but now I see this TWIC card required for captains later this year.

Also it seems like it will be a big issue in the Thousand Island area (bass, pike, walleye) as anglers wander over and back.

US Border and Customs guys at the Hamburg Boat Show yesterday reminded me that if you trailer your boat to Canada, pick up a form at Canadian Customs at the bridge showing how you entered Canada, you could be charged with duties if you don't. They have a couple lists of the things you need to do, just for the US side, not the Canadian side. It's best to talk to them directly as they wanted to be helpful.

After reading the article i need my canadian license, drivers license, birth certificate and a form I-68 to fish canadian water? where do i get a form I-68?

Here's the exception - I ALWAYS troll in a straight line in and out of the same port so I am excluded form all this hooey - RIGHT

Any craft traveling from U.S. port to U.S. port non-stop, and that means continuous travel without stopping for any purpose whatsoever, and in a direct line of travel, may cross the international border to do so without any of the above requirements.

I just got off the phone with the Border Patrol at Niagara Falls.As long as we DO NOT DOCK for any reason in Canadian waters,we DO NOT need a Form I 68.We do need to have our Ontario Fishing License....Launch at the Fort...go into Canadian water...return to the Fort WITHOUT DOCKING in Canadian water.....We're good to go.Number for the NF Border Patrol....716 284 5174..............Zeke/Cyn (Strike 3)

I just called the national boarder patrol and they said the same thing that Zeke said. Just to make sure I called at Niagara Falls too. no problem as long as you don't dock in Canada.

The above link, title 19 sec. 1433 is the law. Anything else that you see on this topic is an interpration of this law.

There were a few articles writtin on this topic in late march that were incorrect. Even one in USAToday that I believe reported false information.

Straight from the US code of Law:

(A) any vessel from a foreign port or place;

(B) any foreign vessel from a domestic port;

© any vessel of the United States carrying foreign

merchandise for which entry has not been made; or

(D) any vessel which has visited a hovering vessel or received merchandise while outside the territorial sea;

If you do any of these, then you need to report to US customs.

I also want to add. They can not enforce something in one area and not enforce it in another. The law is for the entire United States.

What a pain in the arse! You know how big a threat that recreational boaters can be to national security. If the coasties see a 40 foot offshore race boat screaming for a nuke plant with two guys with towels on their heads I say vaporize them. This stuff is getting out of hand.
