New to using copper. Using a 5' flouro leader at the end of the copper. Is this too short?

Is it catching fish?

I know my copper leaders are longer...

My Atomik prebuilt coppers have 50ft leaders. I have aways presumed that one of the advantages of a copper set up was it's stealthiness and a long leader helps insure that!

Keep in mind that the longer the leader the further upward the lure will go behind the copper when just running flutter spoons and light stuff like that by itself. Probably less action to the lure the further out you go as well. if you run longer leaders I'd adjust to heavier spoons (e.g. to a NK 28 vs. a Sutton 44 for example). Flasher's and Spinneys don't require an exceptionally long lead. In my view at least the copper wire going through the deep water may attract fish and when an attractor is used as well you're not as worried about "spooking" the fish and more concerned with action of the presentation than say on shallow clear water where the visibility may be more important.

The longer the leader the longer the shock absorber, as well.  I like 50' leads with my copper, on the off chance I forget to adjust the drag after I set the line out, at least I have some forgiveness with a longer leader.  Not so with a short leader.  Remember that your metal lines have zero stretch to them.

For spoons I like 55' of 20# fluoro and for flashers I like 35' of 30# fluoro.

Thanks guys. Not catching so figured it might be the length.

Less leader resulted in fewer hook ups....no shock absorber. Too much though and I think you lose some of the "magic" of copper. Electric? Undulations? No clue, but it works. We settled on 15-20'.

We put about that much on.

You guys are getting way too technical! We run the swivel through the levelwind and give the reel a couple cranks.

Using a complex system of physics, calculus and algorithms I have developed a way of calculating the maximum fish catching attractiveness of each copper setup I have. It's based on length of copper, length of rod and reel it's stored on. My leader lengths are precisely calculated using my top secret formula.

15-20 feet should do it! Lmao. :)

Paul you left out during August as the molecular density of the water decreases . That was always the main reason I did that , But only during the phasless period on a Southeast Inversion...Trolling South... Kinda Obvious to some but others need to be reminded.. hope this helps..

The boys are spot on with the leader length I went to 100 ft this year and the catch rate dropped . Looks like long is wrong.
