I was wondering if anyone uses PVC for a planer board mast? I have an idea for a base plate and wasn't sure what to use for the mast.

I'd worry about it becoming brittle over time or snapping with big boards pulling . You'd be better off using aluminum tube or stainless IMO. I've seen 500 lb mono line snap on boards before so think of stress on a mast .

I use PVC for my big board mast. I used heavy wall with a 1 1/2" inside diameter, and pounded a 1 1/2" diameter wooden pole the entire length inside. It's worked well for a number of years now.

That's a bit stronger J.D. Thanks for the thread rolmops, great info throughout. Now I just have to figure what I'll go with! Lol

I did the same thing as JD for my Chesapeake Bay Boards down here. 1-1/2" PVC with 1-1/2" wooden dowel the length of the pvc. Been using it for 3 years and it works great.

I used schedule 80 on my homemade one and put a 1' piece of glavanized/black pipe up the bottom.  I did have to heat it a little to get her soft enough for the pipe to slide in.
