We said farewell to mom this week at the age of 86. Many on this forum would have enjoyed meeting her as she was a woman of substance. She took up hunting when I was 12 just so I would have a senior hunter to chaperone me until I could hunt alone, as my dad was a construction worker and quite often wasn't home. We would put mini drives on for each other and both of us got deer this way. She hunted up till last year and got her last deer at age 83. She grew up on a farm so dressing a deer  and complete processing was nothing to her. She gut most of my dad's deer for him through the years because he was so cumbersome with his big hands. Every turkey I shot, she plucked with me, and we would roast them Thanksgiving style, rather than taking the easy way out and skinning them. Her squirrel stew and dumplings were topnotch. In the past 17 years she helped me cut up all my deer but 1. She helped me do all 3 this year. She was an avid gardener and still maintained her garden this year, canning tomatoes, green beans and my fav., zucchini relish. She could swing a hammer with the best of them, I 've seen her mix dozens of wheelbarrows of mortar and concrete through the years for projects with my dad or at my place. She always sewed and for the last 5 years have made "Ugly Quilts" for the homeless. She would sew heavy duty stuff for my hobbies. She sewed a windshield in to my boat canopy, sewed new vinyl gunnel bump boards in 3 colors on my boat, a Nitrous bottle blanket for my race car, on and on! I will miss you forever mom, but I know you're right here by my side! post-147154-0-83654400-1419545737_thumb.png post-147154-0-43261800-1419545792_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-76282000-1419545831_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-66541000-1419546595_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-66626000-1419545880_thumb.jpegpost-147154-0-54789700-1419545930_thumb.pngpost-147154-0-65371300-1419545988_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-33577900-1419546046_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-73976400-1419546080_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-27537700-1419546120_thumb.jpegpost-147154-0-74999300-1419546185_thumb.jpegpost-147154-0-17135900-1419546215_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-28899200-1419546260_thumb.jpegpost-147154-0-74847400-1419546430_thumb.jpgpost-147154-0-39839200-1419546478_thumb.jpg

So very sorry for your loss. She sounded like a very special lady. Most of us have had or still have a Mother, Grandmother who nurtured our thirst for the outdoors. Some took a active part in the sports while others helped with the processing or cooking of our "trophies". Though some may be gone, their influence on our lives is never forgotten. God Bless you & your family.

What an amazing woman! I think my favorite picture is of her driving the boat with that beautiful smile. You are blessed to have had this Matriarch in your life and you're right, she'll be right there at your side wherever you are. May God Bless her and your wonderful family.

What a wonderful woman, my mother in law was the same way. You will have many great memories of mom that will last your lifetime. At a time like this your loss is someones gain, as she travels through the gates of Heaven she will be greeted by those who have been waiting for her arrival and journey on to the unknown, in peace and love. May God bless your mother and your family in these hard times. Pap.

Very sorry for your loss and peace be with you and your family.  Thank you for sharing that at such a difficult time, and what a nice collection of pictures that really shows what a great lady your mom was.  She sure seems like someone who loved life and her family more than anything, and wasn't afraid to  do just about anything and be good at it.
