Bottom paint

If you've seen many of my other posts you already know I have a new boat but, my dad and I got our first aluminum boat... Do you have to bottom paint aluminum boats if you keep them in the water?

If they are going to be in the water all season just like a fiberglass boat the bottom will become fouled. So you are faced with painting it with anti-fouling paint, there are only certain types of anti-fouling paint that can be used on an aluminum boat.

According to West Marine we have to sand it for the first time... Can anyone confirm or deny this

Yes. The aluminum is tuff to get a bond, unless you sand it. No sanding after painting with anti-foul.

You should consider putting on a primer first before your first coat of bottom paint.

Right. Anti-fowl goes on easily with a roller and is designed to come off. It can be rolled on each year. You do not sand it.

Bare aluminum needs an etching primer, then an underwater or above water primer, then the finish paint. Antifouling paint for aluminum must not contain copper.
