A combination fish finder, chart plotter can get you home and out. Not like radar but you know where you are and where you are going. Travel in fog conditions requires a speed where you can stop in half the visible directions, maintain extra lookouts, sound fog signals even if you are anchored and listen for signals from nearby boats. Simply a prolong blast less than two minutes apart while underway. Not underway two prolonged blasts two seconds apart. If you are fishing with long lines or side planers three prolonged blasts two seconds apart followed by two short blasts. A prolonged blast is is four to six seconds long. I am not a sea lawyer.

Last Sunday was similar, we were in about 100 fow when another boat just appeared about 25 yards away going in the opposite direction. A little too close for comfort. Even that close everyone on the other boat just looked like a silhouette.

Radar reflectors/deflectors or an aluminum pail hoisted high will help those big boats see you in the shipping lanes as well.

Your biggest danger is a small boat operating at high speed without regard for other boats out in the fog. They and most other boats do not have radar.

I have a 16 ft Lund. I blasted a fog horn a few times and used a few flares. Couldnt even see them. A compass would have helped.Should have followed the shore from the start of the return to the launch
