We are newbies to this sport, and are trying to figure out what certain marks are on our screen.  Are these fish, baitfish or nothing at all?  And how should we tell the difference?

Yeah, we had balls down at 30 and 32. So in the second pic when its tracking the rigger and it turns red, that's a fish following it?

Yes,  bait generally shows more like a cloud.  Suspended fish will show as a hook.  If your getting followers and not getting bit, try and shorten your lead off the ball.  The fish are coming up to look at the ball, swimming with it for a while, then dropping back down before your bait gets to them.

Definitely fish. When the arch is thin like that, but you have a deep color return, it's a fish. Were there waves out there when you took these pictures? Waves could change the shape of the arch, or the fish could be changing its depth, right under your sonar.
