Question: "peanut" on vhf radio

Overheard some people chatting about "catching fish on a peanut". I haven't heard this terminology before...anyone know?

Peanut is a walnut size laker bait with a flat face usually trolled behind a gang troll. they do catch lakers.

I was laker fishing over memorial weekend.  Ive always used the peanuts behind my cowbells.  But I wanted to try a spin-n-glow for a change.  The peanut seemed to produce more fish.  But the spin-n-glow seemed to catch bigger fish.  maybe it was a fluke.  Im going to keep my eye on it over the summer and see if it stays consistent.

I fish Lake Erie so I guess I can't help you. But they have been working for me just fine.

Sk8man, do you have better luck with peanuts or spin n glows? What's your take?

I fish Cayuga Lake and I run Spin-in-Glows behind a 8" dodger from time to time. Some days it's dead, some so-so and other days it out fishes anything else I have out....just like any other presentation. I catch mostly lakers with them but do pick up a salmon every now & then also.

 

 

 

If your dodger/fly's slow or don't produce throw one of these out. You may be surprised.

Luke I've had good luck with both but on Seneca Lake the peanut has worked best for me behind cowbells

This all depends on what you are running the lure behind. 5/0 hammerheads, 24-28" lead, size 4/0 18-24" leads. Dodgers I have run them from 18- 30"

On Lake Michigan we call use "peanut" to refer to a small fly, tied directly to a treble hook. Mainly for coho and steelhead
