I read here some where about extending or increasing the size of the rudder to make the boat steer better. We have a 89 penn yan and to say they dont respond well at slow speeds is an understatement. Any info would be helpful. Thanks, Clay

They have done this to the boat I work on in Oswego. Its a 84 9meter Trojan and it made a world of difference. Went from somewhat sloppy to solid at all speeds. Good luck.

Increasing the rudder size will absolutely improve a boat low speed handling with the only trade off being slightly reduced top end speed due to increased drag. I have rebuilt/restored several 31' Bertrams and replacing the stock rudders was almost always part of the work. Many older planning hull boats came with what were essentially racing rudders. When you replace the rudders, widen them but be careful about increasing the length too much.

Not on an open forum... It was a one time favor from a buddy. I do know other people who have had their rudders done by Krenzers in sodus

Give Kevin Yerge at Wilson boat yard a call 716 863 1001 about the Raymarine part.  He is the authorized Ray dealer on the Lake.  As far as the rudders give Tim at Krenzer Marine 315 483 6986 a call he will get your rudders made for you.  I installed some this year and they are the Cats A**!!

Industrial Precision products in Oswego would easily do those. Would have to get a price quote tho.
