East Side vs. West Side

Let me start by Thanking everyone who posts on this site. The information exchanged here has been instrumental in how I approach fishing, the tactics I employ, methods I use, and equipment I purchase. I have fished Lake Ontario since I was 13 (over 30 yrs. and counting) with my father, at least once a year, so I have been very fortunate. Thanks to this site, we have been able to experience success we couldn't have imagined when we started.

 

Now to the question(s).

How does fishing from Sodus Bay east to the St Lawrence River differ from fishing from Sodus Bay west to the Niagra, in August?

In what ways are they the same? 

 

The last 30 years have been spent on the west side (Oak Orchard), always the first full week of August. Our success revolved around (weather permitting) getting out to the stable water north offshore every morning (450+') fishing the 60-100' depths utilizing spoons (NK's) at 2.5-3 mph down speed to cover a lot of real estate. Then in the evening working the 100-250' of water fishing the 90-150' depths utilizing SD's and FF's at 2.0-2.5 mph in a more concentrated effort where the charters had success earlier.

 

This year we are headed east (Salmon River), August 8th-16th.  Is there an offshore bite? Should we head West or North to find this stable water? How do the offshore currents compare to the Oak? How does the bottom structure in the 100-250' area compare? I know everyday is different.   I am just looking for "in general" answers.Thank you for taking the time to read through all of this. Looking forward to the responses.

Left the pier heads of the salmon river at 6:00 am. Shut down in 140' of water. Landed one on the set. Worked out to 280'. Fished till 4:00 pm. Finished 3 for 6 on majors. 1 laker and a couple shakers. Kings were 19-24 lbs.
