You answered your own question. They prevent line creepage on the dipsys. You want the drag light enough because wire or braid has no stretch and you will tear hooks out easier than mono, so the releases allow you to keep the drag lighter than normal without the reels bleeding line while trolling...esp. in waves. The releases also help keep wire tight on the reel when fishing is done or when changing a wire swivel.

bretter, you can use rubber bands too. Just half hitch them around the wire where it comes out of the spool and goes up the rod, then just pull it over the handle. When a fish hits it will break off or you might have to rip it off yourself. Just be use it's off before you reel!

The problem with rubber bands is the pieces have an annoying habit of collecting in your bilge, clogging your bilge pump, that sort of thing. The release does the same thing and no crap in the bilge.

This is true Tim, I stick my used ones right into the holder for my cannon balls. You can also use a very small down rigger release like the small ones that Scotty's sells.
