I'm surprised no one has posted about the Fitzpatrick Nuke Plant, nine mile point outside Oswego is officially going to shut down late next year 2016. Entergy corp say's competition from cheaper energy from other sources has made it unprofitable for them to continue it's operations there. Producing electricity from nuclear energy must be very expensive. They said just under 400 of the 610 employees will be laid off by December 2016....then more in the distant future.

The Cooling tower steam cloud plume has been a weather , wind direction and strength indicator for the entire Mexico Bay and Salmon River fishing fleet for years ,both before leaving the dock and while on the water. It will seem weird to look up and not see that steam cloud plume anymore.

They did not mention any other energy producing plans to hook into those massive electric wires that begin at the plant and head south...eg wind turbines etc.

The Plant closing will have an enormous economical impact in the Oswego county area.

The cooling tower is not associated with Fitz, that is part of the cooling system for Nine Mile 2. There are 3 plants on the point, Fitz is the red building. There is still a slight possibility we can be saved, but very slight. Our gov needs to stop being such am idiot and remember upstate does exist!!! The whole area is going to feel the effects if this plant closes.

Yes it will be very different without the steam plume. We'll be fishing in front of the "old" power plant.

Maybe they will pull the buoys.

When Bendix Fluid Power Division, located on Seward Ave, Utica, NY, started it'd closing many years ago it never even hit the news.

Over 2500 head-of-household jobs were gone.

Now the state is going to get in a big twist over 600??

GE pulled of of Utica.........about 6,000 were gone.

Sperry-Rand...........another 1200 or so.

Chicago Pneumatic, Kelsey-Hays, Remington, Bossert Manufacturing, Utica Cutley, Utica Duxbak and the list goes on.

The state did NOTHING.

The Chinese are stealing all our coal resources with their cohorts in Washington. Our steel mills are gone now with Chinese steel being dumped here and throughout the world. Aluminum producers are being shut down due to Chinese aluminum coming here. Not only New York has lost half a dozen coal power plants, the Ohio river system lost twenty eight plants. The do gooders will say this is best for you but it only takes five days for the smoke from China to reach the shores of USA. Heaven help us if a war erupts, we are done in a couple weeks since we have lost our manufacturing capabilities.

Just stop.. You really think if a war with China broke out it would be won on manufacturing capabilities? Its 2015 not 1940's

Yep no tax breaks or help for non "Andrew" sponsers while he gives 10 year no tax deals to others at our expense. We all better wise up and really take a hard line with certain New York officials!

My plan is to become Florida resident in 18 months and just visit New York for the summers! Sad but taxes and corrupt officials sucks here!

Thanks for that info Rich...I thought it was all 1 big company out there on the point.

I read where Ginna Nuke Plant will also be closing soon...2017 it said.Makes you wonder how many more years the remaining 2 reactors will continue operations at 9 mile pt. after Fitzpatrick shuts down next year.

Nuclear power is actually one of the cheapest forms of energy out there. However it can't compete with burning natural gas to make power. But burning natural gas contributes to green house gases. So the real cost of burning natural gas is on the health of our planet.

When the pension funds and Social Security go into the tank, Florida will not be so desirable.

That's not going to happen in the near future! You young folks may be concerned about it,
