If I am out on the water and find my cranking battery does not start, is it better to use jumper cables to connect my deep cycle trolling motor battery to my cranking battery or to just switch batteries to get back home.

I'm no mechanic but it would seem SAFER to change batteries (potential for sparks etc.) than to jump start. I keep jumpers on the boat too but they are thought of as "last resort".

There is a switch on the market called a Perco switch. That would be your simple solution

Ditto on the Perco. had it happen to me once. Ended up being a heavily corroded wire but rather than crawling around swapping cables I simple switch works best.
