Anyone have/had a Johnson outboard 2001 or newer? Im looking at boats and found one, but it has a 150 hp 2 stroke Johnson on it. Ive always thought of Johnsons as being at the bottom of the food chain. any input would be appreciate as usuall, Thanks ahead of time.

From what I understand those carbed Johnson 2 strokes are a very reliable motor, one they built for many years. Bottom of the food chain? Well if you consider it's uses old technology, maybe so, but it's pretty much bullet proof. The bad news or that motor, and other carbed 2 strokes, is that they are gas hogs compared to todays motors. Get yourself a nice 4 stroke kicker and you'll be good to go.

I bought a 21' chris craft scorpion with a 200hp johnson (1984) with VRO which was disconnected and mix the oil. Ran on lake Champlain without any problems. Runs very smooth. PJ

The simplicity of 2 stroke outboards [no camshafts, valve train parts] have made them very reliable. The lighter weight on your transom is also desirable. When you add in the oil filter changes and maintenance of a 4 stroke O/B [$84 at a dealer], they are competitive.

We had problems with hard starting and fouling the plugs for three seasons on two different johnson 2 stroke kicker motors. We ended up getting a honda 4 stroke and are more than pleased with it, even though it is heavier than a 2 stroke.

Perhaps we just got two bad ones in a row or perhaps the local dealership that we bought them from didn't fix them when we first had issues...

I have a 2000 Johnson 150 2 stroke. We have not had any major problems. Please take the kicker advice. I ended up putting on a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke.
