My boat has scuppers, just above the waterline. When I get several

big guys in the back, the flaps don't close tight enough to make a complete

seal, so I get some water coming in. Also, had the rear bilge fail last

year and once the rainwater filled that up enough to weigh the boat

down, water came in as well. Darn near had a major problem.

Anyway, I thinking of blocking the scuppers and going with a second

rear bilge. Looking for a thin material to replace the flaps with that

would seal, and also stand up to sun and water.

Any ideas?

Times Two

You can get replacement scuppers at just about any marine center. There not expensive. I did mine last year and they work great. That second billage is nice when you need it. Good luck

Great subject. When I had a trophy boat I had a 115 honda on it. Probably to heavy of a motor for the boat but as you say get a couple heavy guys in the back and it would submerge the scuppers.I had the rubber flaps. I ended up replaceing the flap scuppers with a new style scupper. They were a tube with a checkball in it . Sealed real tight when they submerged. I dont remember where I got them . You also have to keep an eye on them making sure you keep seaweed ,leaves and other kinds of junk out of them. But they did the job. If I remember right I think I had to drill the scupper holes out larger....

Thanks guys.

I got the replacement flaps last year at a marine store and they were

too stiff to work correctly. I know the ones with the balls, and have

been thinking about that.

I have 1 pump in the aft and another midships, so a 3rd would be just

for emergency.

I think I'm really leaning towards blocking it, and the sheet metal would

probably be the best bet....something like a piece of tin? Alumimun

siding?

If you feel as if you have to do away with them. Instead of drilling holes etc. for sheet metal. Look into standard automotive expansion soft plugs. (The rubber type you tighten the nut to lock them in.) Paint them after there in place and your all set. I'm thinking there is probably about a 2" hole thought the hull once you pull the old one's out.

I have the same problem with my scuppers. I have tried new scuppers and the problem still exsists. I also had a bilge problem. The float kept sticking. I purchased an electric float switch from West Marine. This switch notices the ionization of water and turns on your pump. I have not had it fail yet. Even if it is covered by oil it will still read through the oil.
