I think it has to do with how far away from the boat it is more than anything and yes it will go deeper..

Easy way to find true depth, is tie light leader and head for skinnier water. I did this with divers and coppers to prove depth. Remember. Speeds, currents, lures all change how deep we can get. Not just our line presentation. BTW, Mike your twenty color sucks. I hate winding that in

What size reel do you use for 20 color?

OKUMA CLARION CLR 553ls high speed reel... You could also use a Shimano Tekota 800.. it's not something I run on a normal basis but if I'm working Deep fish and they're being finicky I will run that out
