There's some gear oil coming out. The hole looks so jagged I can't tell if something broke and shot out or it's a rough finished weep and I have a bad seal its a 2012 Mercury 90 4stroke. Any thoughts?

You can try googling it. On a Mercruiser I/O it is a weep hole from the shift mechanism and that may be the grease/oil you see coming out. Check your lower unit oil if you cant get a answer and see if it milky and or filled to the top. Usually it only holds a quart ,so its not going to cost you much to verify one way or another. My gut feeling is it is residue from the shift linkage.

You can pressure test it with a vacuum/pressure gauge that probably can be bought at Harbor Freight for a few bucks, just adapt the end of the gear oil filler tube threaded end cap to the vacuum hose with a hose clamp

There is  guy near  Barker /Sommerset that fixes outboard motors at a reasonable price. If you want info shoot me a PM. Or start scouring ebay/craigslist etc for prices if your doing it yourself.

Thanks bob. I tore it down and cleaned it today looks repairable have to see what the welder thinks about it

I had a lower unit welded,it didn't work and it would have been cheaper to replace the housing to start with. If the crack runs after welding you well lose oil and fill up with water and tear up the gears and leave you dead in the water.
