I have a standard  horizon hand held and put  a new uniden solara vhf in boat . I seldom  turn it on  . thing drives me nuts any more

I had real good luck with UNIDEN vhf radios

what makes the radio is the ANTENNA I found it pays to use a antenna with a brass rod inside not a cheeper model which would have a coaxle  cable inside a good one is Shakespeare

1. Just a little FYI on marine radios . Any vessel that has a marine radio (VHF) aboard is required by law to have it on and monitor channel 16 for emergency broadcasts .

Are the boafang reliable? I cant believe how cheap they are lol

They work great on land from what I'm told. They are programmable and have lots of extras very cheap too because they are made in China but for some reason they are made well.

No. It's one you would need to mount.

I also picked up a Standard Horizon GX1600........I hooked it up to the garmin FF/plotter and the gps/polling feature works great....along with the DSC for hailing buddies
