I measure 18" from cavitation plate to transom mount.

Good motor! I have a bf20h. And I can troll 8 hours pushing my 31ft boat on less than 2.5 gal.

It does have an alternator. 

I don't know how to answer the long/short shaft question.  When I look up specs, it says 15" transom height is short and 20" is long.  I measure 18" from transom clamp to cavitation plate.  Maybe someone else can help me out here.

It sounds and looks like a long shaft.  Just sometimes pictures can fool the eye.  You have my attention but I must remove some garage items to acquire more items.  Thanks, they are great motors!  I have a 9.9 that I used as a kicker and I could troll 18 hours on a 3 gallon tank.  Unmatched

Post a pic of the serial # and model # plate or sticker. One of those numbers should help identify what the shaft length is.
