Hi. I posted this on the panfish forum too but thought it might be good to post it here as well? I Just moved to Farmington area and have been focused mostly on teaching my little girl to fish the last few years.  she turns 4 in August. it is going very well so far and she has really been into it and we go at least once most weeks, but looking to expand a little bit, get her into some perch and bigger bluegills and other stuff a little this year and a couple additional boat trips under her belt - plus since the kids it is pretty hard to get the boat out.  Canandaigua lake is very close but i have never fished it for panfish, only honeoye and conesus for panfish.  at her age, long trips in the car and then fishing is a little tough but honoye is still reasonable and actually closer than it use to be but hoping we might get into some decent panfishing in canandaigua and was looking for some feedback on if it can be okay for panfish and if anyone had any pointers on water depth to target this time of year in that lake if going for bluegill or perch?

Thanks,

Eric

mid summer canandagiua boat traffic sucks if she is not into the morning thing than that is a tough lake for fishermen mid summer.  seneca is just as close but I dont know the panfish there very well.  cross lake is closer than it looks about 45 mins.  I bay is real close as well as the genny but to be honest from that area for panfish honeyoe and conesus are probably the best bet.  throw a shiner out on a bobber on conesus while fishing and she might hit a big bass pike or tiger.  your close to the canal is well but in that area i have never found much for size though i havent fished it much as I got the boat right around the same time i moved to the area and got into trout and salmon trolling

You can go out of the north end launch and just head a little east to 8-12 fow and there is plenty of panfish on Canandaigua. If you launch somewhat early and are off the water around noon you won't have too many problems with traffic.

Paul gave you some good advice. Panfishing on Canandaigua is mainly done at the north and south ends (with some exceptions in early Spring and Fall) At the north end drift in 12-18 ft of water until you find some and then anchor up off the the outside of them and cast back into where you got the fish.  This time of year you will be encountering dink perch in many places as the big ones are deep usually and tough to find.  Fishing the gills is much more "spotty" than on Honeoye and usually better on the south end of the lake. Honeoye is much more consistent on panfish than Canandaigua for most folks. I fished it for walleyes (unsuccessfully) a couple days ago but noted some Menonites on a pontoon boat hammering the gills about a mile or so north of the launch ramp on the east side in about 26 ft of water which was a bit surprising as most folks were in close and not doing that well. A lot of weeds and cotton wood fibers on the surface there though.
